What to Look for at the Parade of Homes

It's that time of year again! The Madison Area Builder's Association Parade of Homes has begun and we are pleased to have two homes in this year's Parade; Fox Point in Sun Prairie and Kilkenny Farms in Waunakee.

Spending an afternoon or evening walking through these beautifully decorated and furnished homes is particularly valuable if you are considering building, remodeling or are currently in the building or remodeling process. Not only will you have the opportunity to meet with builders face-to-face, you will be able to see an example of the quality and craftsmanship of their work.

Here are some key areas to check out when you're visiting the Parade of Homes:

FLOOR PLAN LAYOUT: You will tour all sorts of two-story and single story floor plan layouts. See what type of flow feels best to you. Do you like all the bedrooms together or do you like separation? Living rooms with a view to the back yard and living rooms with a window in the front of the house. Laundry rooms on 2nd floors near the bedrooms and laundry rooms connected to mud rooms. The possibilities are endless.

WALL COLORS: If you're considering painting rooms in your home or trying to choose what colors for your new home, this is your chance to see how different colors look painted in a room versus on a color swatch at the hardware store. Many of the homes will have information on display as to the brand and color of each paint color used in the home.

LIGHT FIXTURES: Not only is walking through a lighting showroom hard on your neck, but it can be difficult to envision fixtures in a home. At the Parade, you'll see how different fixtures accentuate each room.

FLOORING: Rarely to do you get to see flooring options installed and how these products feel under your feet. Do you like the wood floor installed at an angle? What type of tile installation to you like for your floors, back splash and shower?

INTERIOR TRIM & DOORS: This is one of those items people seem to forget about when thinking about building a new home. They may know early on if they want white trim or painted wood trim, but are unsure of what trim and door style. Look at the casing around the doors and windows. Look along the floor for the size and style of the base.

COUNTERS: This is an easy one and probably one of the most looked at features at the Parade. The variety of materials and colors will amaze you.

THE PEOPLE: The most important part of building a home or undertaking a remodeling project is the people you choose to work with throughout the process. During the Parade, builders and their reps, are in the homes looking forward to your questions and feedback. Is the person you're speaking with receptive to your questions and knowledgeable about the products and materials in the home?

Whatever your reason for visiting the Parade, whether it be for research or just pure enjoyment, there is something to take away for everyone.
